Description

A marina under construction. Huge concrete pylons weighing 3 tons each are driven into the river bed below to which floating concrete pontoons are fixed. Image is captured at night from an elevated position, approximately 50 metres away.

Shot shutter priority - 30 second exposure, 18 - 70 nikkor lens @ f6.3

Hi folks. Thank you!

The area is in Melbourne's (Australia) Docklands precinct, largely disused as Melbourne quickly outgrew its old ports, but now reclaimed in a similar way to London's Docklands (light industrial/residential)

The orange lighting is predominant in the area, presumably because was once heavy industrial and would assist with visibility in fog etc, and the bluer lighting is cast from a section where a customs building resides. I loved how the two sources of lighting blended and decided to select a long exposure to 'smooth' out the surface of the Yarra River and provide a metallic sheen. I also loved the pylon's eerie shadows, and since I took this photo, the concrete walkways and many boats have moved in, and this scene cannot be reproduced.
