Hi Simon,
I agree with Curtis ... such a tremendous photo! In fact, this will make a great subject for BetterPhoto's "Where in the World" quiz.
Kerry

Hi Everyone,

John is correct. This is a place which I have visited quite often, Dunstanburgh Castle on a beautiful stretch of the Northumberland coastline between Craster and Embleton and a truly fantastic image! #3408128

Well done to those of you who identified the location as Dunstanburgh Castle, on the north Northumberland coast, England, U.K.

This is the view of the ruined castle from the Craster side looking north. The picture was taken on the winter Solstice (21st December) in the immediate aftermarth of a fierce storm that had left me wet and cold from the driving. freezing rain (nothing unusal for the North Sea coast in December!). The strong wind was pounding the waves on to the rocks and generally making conditions quite difficult. A slow shutter speed was used to allow some motion blur in the water, whilst I used the hyperfocal focus technique to ensure maximum depth of field for my chosen aperture of f/16. Exposure was established by taking spot meter reading from the castle and the white water and averaging the two readings. The wonderful light is due to the sun which had just risen above the horizon, and was casting long raking shadows across the waves and rocks.

By the time I had finished shooting my fingers were so numb with cold that I could not detach the camera from my tripod, so I had to lift my equipment on to my arms to carry it back to my car.

The pictures were more than worth the discomfort I experienced whilst shooting them!

Regards,

Simon #3502263
