Beach Enrichment

Description

This sand is being pumped in from the Morehead City Inlet. There are 3 international shipping ports in North Carolina one inland at Charotte and two that are protected from the ocean by the Outer Banks. For the big cargo ships to enter they need to pass thru an inlet, an open gap of the barrier islands. The currents fill the gaps in with sand so periodically the sand needs to be dredged or pumped out to depths exceeding 50 feet. Our beach is one of the closest to the inlet about 1 mile away from our home. We get the benefit of beach enrichment every couple of years thus widening and thickening our beach sands. As the season progress part of the sand will drift up into the dunes. The created dunes are home to all kinds of wildlife including fowl, fox, coyotes and crawlers. Most important to us is protecting us from hurricane and Nor’easter storms. Also the widening of the beach is a haven for beach goers and fishermen all year long.
