Description

This is an AI generated image. We do have a good snowy owl population in and around Calgary, but snow has yet to arrive here this winter ;) I used the free Text-to-Image AI software named Canva. The text used was "A closeup of a snowy owl flying straight towards the viewer with full wing span in falling snow." And voila!, it gave me a few stunning choices to choose from. I just did one minor edit to the image in Canva!. All it took was 5 minutes in a cozy/ comfortable space at home. No camera/lens or photographic technique involved in this production. I believe that AI imagery is a pretty disruptive phenomena to the photographic industry, which is here to stay and prosper. It seems likely that 'Generating' will soon overwhelm 'Capturing' images part of the industry. I must confess though, personally, there was no thrill/fun or any sense of accomplishment either in the process or the result! Just my 02 cents.

The picture is awesome. That being said, the thrill of the capture doesn't exist. There are so few real things left in this world that an honest image especially of live creatures has to rate up there in the top 10 of joyful experiences. I so appreciate your 02 cents. I'll make one more comment: generating does not equate to artistic manipulation as the first cannot be observed while the second is obvious. #12056399

It's a stunning image, Usman. Thank you for providing details and also your thoughts on AI. It's a changing world but when a sentence or two can produce an outstanding image, with no camera, planning, time investment, editing, it doesn't seem like AI should have a place here at Better Photo. Perhaps Jim should start a new website for AI generated images. Or, at the very least, give it it's own category. Thanks for your honestly. #12065359

While the image is stunning, I find everything described interesting with one very, very major omission. What camera was used and what was the story about the capture of light that is the true artistry of photography with subsequent post processing. Anything else is just graphics art. #12065360
