The Jordan Staircase of the Winter Palace

Description

The Winter Palace was commissioned by Czarina Elizabeth and now houses the Hermitage Museum which is the largest in the world with over 1057 rooms none identical and 117 staircases and houses over 3 million items. The main staircase is the Jordan Staircase (named after river Jordan for baptism of Jesus). It has large marble steps and marble statues going from the Rastrelli Gallery to the first floor. It can not be photographed in one capture. At the center landing is the statue of Justice.

The Winter Palace (Hermitage Museum) extends over 20 acres and total perimeter is over one mile. It was another masterpiece of Rasrrelli. After a fire in 1837 it was restored inside along the lines of Russian Classicism but retained Rastrlli's light and graceful baroque. It contains the most valuable collections of art in the world. #1575161
