Saturday night, I drove through there in the dark so I don't have any idea of what Cedar Breaks looks like. But it would have been a wonderful opportunity to stop and take a Milky Way picture. I would have if it hadn't been about 25-degress out when I drove through. When were you there? Did you hit that sudden, quarter-mile long patch of thick ice and packed snow right at the top of the crest?

I would try simulate a little of that great red rock sunset glow in this. Brighten the reds a little, darken the sky (multiply blend?) and maybe open the shadows in the foreground a little.

The s-curve is a very important element in this image. It help add depth and distance and continues curve of the ridgeline. But I would try cleaning up the bottom of the picture by cropping it up to about the level where pullout ends, or at the very least to eliminate those bottom two chunks of asphalt hanging off the edge of the pavement. #1566484

This was Thursday, around noon. I was driving home from Vegas and decided to take a gamble and make a short detour up Cedar Canyon with the intent of taking the road that cuts north through Cedar Breaks. It was a gamble, because while the main road through the canyon stays open year round, the road through Cedar Breaks does not. And, as luck would have it, it was still closed. So, this is heading east up Cedar Canyon. I'm not sure if it is technically part of the Cedar Breaks park, but it's at least the same rock formations and was the best view I was going to get.

I've incorporated your suggestions, Stephen, to varying extents. I think it is a definite improvement. After more have had the chance to view and comment, I'll post the original image. #10998517

what a beautiful shot Jeff. I really like what the edit did to the rocks and foreground but not sure I like what it did to the sky I am not sure if its the darkness or the color. #10998559

Love shots with an S curve in them and this one works well. Stephen’s eye for detail always amazes me but I think he did a great job and the proof is in the edit. I think it looks great. #10998694

Beautiful country, Jeff and S-curves hold a fascination for me also.

Agree with Rita on the sky, but otherwise like the edit, as well as the original.

However, if I were making the S-curve the main POI, then I would use a different crop instead of going for the panorama. A simple 4x6 with the lower left corner in the same spot as your edit, and the skyline at the vertical ROT, would achieve that goal. #10998816

You've reminded me there is nothing like that in Illinois Jeff. I must get out more!

Thanks everyone!

Here's another version with the adjustments to the sky backed off a bit.

Dale - I disagree with your crop suggestion. To me, the red rocks are the focal point and the road just helps draw you into the image. The 4x6 crop you suggested takes too much off of the skyline for my taste. #10998880

And, just for fun, here's the SOOC shot. #10998882

Dale Hardin March 12, 2014

Jeff, I only mentioned that because of previous statements about the curve being a major point. Notice I said "if" the road is your main POI. Like you, the hills were the major interest for me. #10998887

Thanks for giving my suggestions a shot, Jeff. I like the way the rocks turned out and the crop. Skies are giving me trouble too, lately.

I like the 2nd edit the best so far. It looks like it was pretty cold there, a lot like here! I love the way the s curve draws you into the shot! #10999618

Jeff - Great "S" curve and I love the way the reds really warm up the image. I agree with Rita on the color of the sky in the first edit but don;t think it is any kind of deal-breaker. It does still look mighty cold there. #10999627

That last edit is pretty darn good. It is beautiful. Thanks for posting the original. It is so eye opening to see what others' SOOC shots look like. A little flat like mine:)

Beautiful comp. #11000305

Thanks, everyone!

Elaine - if you are shooting RAW, your SOOC shots will look a little bland prior to processing. The nature of RAW is that it is completely un processed in camera. If you are shooting jpeg, your camera is applying some processing to the file when it creates and compresses the jpeg file. You get far more control with the RAW file, but it does require processing. #11000319

Elaine Hessler March 14, 2014

Oh-that makes sense! I knew that but didn't connect the dots. I do shoot in RAW now, so that explains it! #11000336

Love these shots, Jeff. Being in north Texas, the only mountain I have us a red ant hill! Lol.

I like curvy roads like this. It leads the viewer right to the main subject of the photo with a few lovely side stops to see along the way.

S-curves is my license plates on my Mini Cooper S, too! The curves are very fun to drive! Lol #11002424
