I had to stop my Teton shots and let you all see some of the raptors we shot up beyond Denver at Hawkquest. Not a cheap meet-up but was well worth the cost. I have as many pictures from the this shoot as all the time in GT!! This was the peregrine falcon and here are a couple other ones that I just got to today. #1542783

very nice! great captures #10829267

Great stuff Debbie. Can you share your technical data? Distance, lens settings etc. #10829349

Debbie E. Payne September 01, 2013

Sure, Dale. I was using my 70-200 f2.8 set on shutter priority. I think that most of the time I was using ISO 400 so I could have the speed I needed for shooting and accounting for movement of the birds. When it came to panning I threw out probably 90% of what I took. I need to start figuring shutter priority and try to take more motion type shots. My stills I was very happy with though. #10829353

Thanks for the info Debbie. It's very helpful in case I ever get an opportunity like that. #10829494

Debbie, you got great detail in the falcon! These guys are all hard to get sharp pictures like you did!
Did the bard owl have eye issues? Looks like he may be blind.
I bet this was great!!! #10829778

Great shots Debbie. I think my favorite is the Bard Owl which is unusual and very cute, but they all look good. #10830279

Yes, he had a lazy eye for sure. But I thought he was SO cute. I kept going back to him and the bald eagle the most. It was easy because each bird had a handler, and Hawkquest "rents" out part of a state park for this event Our meet-up fee of $50 each went back into the non-profit organization for raptors I didn't think that was so bad with a cap of only 20 people shooting. Everyone had enough time and we didn't get into each other's way. #10830294

Now I will show you three of Martin's pictures. Not too shabby. A great little camera. #10830296

Beautiful captures of a selection of birds Debbie. I noted the leg ring on the falcon and before reading was wondering how you had captured this shot in the wild. Just as an aside, there is a typo on the first owl. It is a "Barred owl" rather than a "bard owl". I checked my Audubon field guide and online so I believe I am correct.
Great images! #10830347

Cool shots, Debbie. I love the one of the eagle with the tongue hanging out. Is Hawkquest designed for people to go and photograph the birds? #10830528

Peter -- you have surfaced. How are you feeling. Since I had never read about the Barred Owl and the handler was just telling us about him, I couldn't tell if it was Barred or Bard. Personally, I like "Bard Owl" and I would have named him Shakespeare...

Lisa. If you have the time, DO try to find a meet-up of photographers. You can do so much more in an organized group of like-minded individuals. I belong to two groups - both groups have both free and paid classes. For instance later this week one of my photo buddies is hosting a session on "Coffee" and she will help us stage props we are to bring and use her expertise in studio lighting. I have wanted to try this kind of photography because it lends itself to the texture work that I really enjoy. And later in September the same lady has arranged for a group of us to go to someone's barn and shoot barnyard animals. There is always something to do. #10830664

Debbie, these are all great shots! It is great you have the photo clubs that do things! #10831238

Good morning Debbie. I had the last of my tests on Friday so now the neurologist has my MRI, EEG and NCV test results and hopefully will make an appointment for me later this week. I am no longer anxious and fairly relaxed about the whole thing, so will let you all know later.
"Shakespeare" I like that! #10831334
