Here's the ship those chains belong to, the Wm Mather. #1539645

Well, it's not very ladylike, Elaine, but it sure is an awesome imgae! #10801298

The picture of the chains doesn't do much for me, but I love the photo of the boat.Is there any way to give the sky more colour? #10801389

OK Elaine; now you've got me humming Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools"

"For five long years
I thought you were my man
But I found out, I'm just a link in your chain
Oh, you got me where you want me
I ain't nothing but your fool
You treated me mean
Oh you treated me cruel
Chain, chain, chain
Chain, chain, chain
Chain of fools"

And for the more serious minded- the William Mather is a retired Great lakes bulk carrier steamship, built in 1925 and now a restored floating museum in Cleveland. Used to carry up to 14,000 tons of iron ore to the steel works back in heyday of Cleveland's steel industry.

And there you are Lisa; it might just be a boring chain to you girl but it takes me off on yet another voyage of discovery. #10801737

I had the same reaction as Peter, and have that song stuck in my mind, to the credit of a powerful image.

Thanks for the background on the ship, Peter, which is particularly interesting to me, having grown up near the shores of Lake Michigan.

I would bring out the details on the lower part of the ship and the "sky is the limit" on what you can do with that. Love the POV.

I can only say one thing-RAW rules.

Let me know if I brought out the shadows or anything else too much. I used Viveza. #10802271

Jeff E Jensen August 09, 2013

I would back off on the shadows on the boat a bit, but the sky looks fantastic! #10802366

Susan Williams August 09, 2013

I really like the edits, Elaine. The shadows fit with the light and I love the sky. I also love the forward line perfectly straight and perfectly centered to emphasize the height of the ship. What a great capture! #10802401

Beth Spencer August 09, 2013

Elaine I like the chain, and seeing the boat helps put it all in perspective. I like the edit of the boat, but agree with Jeff the shadows need to open a bit!
Cool Shots! #10802451

I have to agree with Beth that the chain image is very nicely captured. but WOW the boat image is outstanding for all the reason Beth mention. I would open the shadow a tad. your edit really looks good and I am with you on viveza I use that more than any other filter.

thanks Peter for the solo.... #10802988

On the chain picture, you might try a 8:10 crop that eliminates the bright background, and then rework the image to re-balance the tonalities. Try to lighten bollard in the background to get a little more depth #10804241

Elaine Hessler August 11, 2013

Ok-I am a bit confused here. Stephen, I don't know what you mean by rework the image to re-balance the tonalities. Is there too much contrast? Should I flatten it out? Using levels?

As for the ship, I originally posted it to show the context of the chains, but I certainly do not mind working on this one too. I thought Jeff said to back off on the shadows, because I overdid it (hull is too light). But then Beth and Rita want the shadows opened up-lightened more? I didn't know how to interpret this, so I did open the shadows more up top on the deck, and darkened the hull a bit.

Please explain if I missed the boat on this one.

.....Pun intended.... #10804497

Susan Williams August 11, 2013

I really like the increased details in the hull and sky in your first revision of the ship. #10804518

Stephen Shoff August 11, 2013

In my suggestion of cropping the chain image, Elaine, you will end up cropping off brighter areas in image. You might end with an image that is too dark with limited contrast since everything will be dark except the area of white paint. So you might need to lighten the dark color tones in the picture to brighten the picture overall and to increase contrast. #10804904

Elaine Hessler August 13, 2013

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I did crop the image and lightened the mid tones. Let me know if this is what you had in mind. #10806734

Stephen Shoff August 14, 2013

Yes, that is what I had in mind, although I would have shifted the crop more to the right so that the chain links along the right margin were complete. I also see better separation between the chain and bollard.

Don't think the edits made huge difference in the overall composition, but I do think I prefer it more. #10807968

Elaine Hessler August 14, 2013

Thanks-I can recrop this. Which part is the bollard? I thought you were referring to something in the upper left. #10807998

Elaine Hessler August 15, 2013

Here you go. #10808907

Stephen Shoff August 15, 2013

The bollard is the big metal fixture the chain is wrapped around.

Yes, that is the crop I had in mind. #10809537

Susan Williams August 15, 2013

Love the edited version, Elaine. Good eye to capture it and the edit made it even more compelling. #10809560
