Charcoal Kilns

Description

These 25-foot tall structures can be found well-preserved in California's Death Valley National Park. They were designed by Swiss engineers and built by Chinese laborers in 1879. To make the charcoal, pinyon pine tree logs from the surrounding area were placed inside these domes and set afire. The burning of the wood took 6 to 8 days. It would take another 5 days to cool down the resulting charcoal.
