That is partially why I did a dark vignette to take away from the letters while keeping them intact. Everyone knows what is written behind Lincoln - it would have been sacrilege almost to clone them out. You should have seen what was underneath him -- tons of middle schoolers milling around....they won't be around in hordes at the end of August. The teachers were all trying to get their last field trips in, I am sure. #10101157

Great detail! I love how well exposed these images are and like both configurations. In both of them though I think I personaly would be creating composites with the backgrounds. Getting creative with an old looking flag image or having those works work more like a light texture. Did you get a photo of the words just by themselves? Would be neat to blank out the background as is and then place those words on a diagonal or something. I hope I'm making sense and not just rambling! lol :~) #10101457

I think I do understand what you are trying to say and yes I do have another version that I could put on the diagonal in the square version. It's been a long time since I've made any displacement maps but I can always look them up in one of my books and have a go at it. Here is the one with the wording behind it. Pretty standard fare but room to play for sure. I even have a horizontal of the box seats at the Ford Theatre where Booth shot him. We went to see "1776" there one night and it was a great musical. #10101730

Not sure, Dale. I do have quite a few flag images so that might work. I will have to play one of these days and come across something I like. I like how these shots are almost devoid of color but the color they have adds a certain warmth. #10102456

These shots are getting me excited to go to DC! I hope some of that scaffolding is down by then..

I think for the second shot if you cropped in all sides except the left to put the hand in the right upper ROT the composition would be improved and the letters would be less of an issue.. #10103271

I like both images. The detail and texture is really good and the colors do work well. I like the lighting on the square crop. It really shows space between the statue and the back wall. I lettering is not a distraction for me. The crop, besides being original and dramatic, did capture the complete message of the memorial.

Thank you, Stephen and Rita. I think the images I took of Lincoln turned out much better than Jefferson or Roosevelt. I have a story to tell you all about the Roosevelt Memorial -- when I get to that one! I may leave good old Lincoln alone for a while. I need to plow through a ton of photos and just get the bulk down to a reasonable number of files. I did do a few of the Washington National Cathedral because that is where I think I got the best shots; despite the wire over the windows.

Yes, Ellen ... that earthquake really did create some havoc. Just ask my husband. He had a business trip in DC when the quake hit and he was stuck down in one of the Metro stations and it took several hours for him to get back to his hotel. Not the best experience in the world.

And the rest of you, thank you for your input. Some good ideas to go back to in a little while. #10105018

I'm so excited for our trip. I hope some of the scaffolding is down and the reflecting pool is no longer under construction.

I was so dissapointed last fall to have the reflecting pool under construction. And my siser and her family were there over spring break, they'ed gotten a lot of work done, but still no water. #10107493

The reflecting pool should be finished by the end of June -- that is what the ranger told me when I went up to ask because I was disappointed as well. I guess there is always going to something being renovated. Was the scaffolding up on the Capitol when you were there?? #10107704
