Doing protraits

I just bought the Canon Digital Rebel with the EF-S 18-55mm lens. Anyway, I'm looking to do some human portrait shots and I know that a lot of people recomment doing it at 80mm and the EF-S lens is equilvalent to a standard 28-80mm lens, it should be enough...but it's not. I'm a little low on cash and always believed in getting the most out of my money and narrowed it down to:

*Quantaray - 28-200MM F3.8-5.6 Lens for Canon AF
*Quantaray - 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 High Speed Auto Focus Zoom for EOS Canon

While the 28-200mm lens would render my existing lens useless and would give me less of a range to work with when doing other types of photography, it does have a wider aperature range, something I'm fairly interested in since most people recommend getting a f/2.8 lens. Does anyone have any opinion about the two lens? Or any other lens I should be looking at?

Your EF-S lens has gotten good comments in the photographic press (Shutterbug). The tele end of it turns out to be what portrait photographers recommend. Both of the lenses you mention have too wide a zoom range to be truly good at any focal length. It's a cheap brand, probably made by Sigma, who isn't known for quality in this price line. The lens you have is of better optical quality and build quality than either of these two cheapies. Look for an 85 1.8 Canon EF, keeping in mind that you will get a cropping effect like about a 120mm using a digital Rebel. This would give you the additional reach you seem to want.Check keh.com for a fair price on a used lens.
