Rain Cover

We are taking a trip to Alaska, leaving August 27 to Sept 7. We will be in Denali, Katmai and Anchorage. We have several day trips set up and one night at Katmai. Four nights at Denali. I am in need of a good rain cover for my camera. Any recommendations? Thanks!

I just got back from a trip to the same area a few weeks ago and while the weather was mostly overcast the whole time, it did rain on occasion. I didn't plan ahead as you are now, so had to improvise at the last minute on a day when it started to sprinkle and discovered the best covers ever: plastic bowl covers to store food leftovers. My friends had some new ones in their camper, all sizes, so I took a medium one and a larger one with me out shooting. They are sturdy and the elastic edges help secure the cover in place over the camera and lens. For a last-minute idea, they worked pretty well! Have a safe trip!

Tammy, try a transparent plastic bag (size depends on camera -- the large gives room to move hands around inside), scissors for a precut hole to poke the lens through and a rubber band to keep it in place. It all fits easily in a pocket and it's cheap. (Years ago I bought one of those fancy rain covers with a zillion snaps and instructions requiring an engineering degree to understand. Used it once. Gave it to someone else who isn't using it either.) Then again, a shower cap works well in an emergency. Don't forget a little towel, mostly for your wet hands. I use of of those fast-drying camping jobs.

  Hi Tammy,
I have used a hotel shower cap on few occasions and it worked great. Always carry one in my photo bag.
