Entries I just entered an old photo in the "Flowers" which has a sub theme of "Books and Writing". At least that's the way I understand it. Today is July 27th so there are not many days left in this month. At this time there are 135 entries in this category. Is this normal? It seems low for "flowers" and low for just about any category. I have entered around 5 photos this month. I used to enter around 15-20. Just saying....

This category is, at least for this month, very confusing to many. Your entry is lovely, and appropriate for the theme. Many of the entries are flowers, which, as I understand it, is not the way it's intended to be now. It's supposed to be Books and Writing in the still life/flowers category. It will be interesting to see how the judging goes.

I agree, some sub-categories are confusing, some simply not easy. For example, there are only 97 entries (so far) in the Monuments at Night (Man-Made) category but 745 entries in Catch-All - the most "crowded" group where flowers compete with animals, bottles, lobsters, etc. It should not be this way. Entries used to be spread more or less evenly among the categories and … BP members were much happier.

This is all very confusing! I too see a lot of floral images in the (Still life/Flowers) category! It's like the photographers are viewing this as a floral category and that the monthly theme for this category, Books/Writings is only a suggestion! So how are we to approach these categories with the monthly theme in front of it? Jim how are you approaching these categories with the judging and most of the images are flowers?

I agree with all of you. Some of the categories are confusing. I am also not entering as often due to the change. I know several of our long time members are not renewing their membership because of the themed categories. Really hate to see this happen. Will miss them.

To make matters worse, the categories are reported differently throughout the site. On the recent winners, the First Place winners show the correct (June) category, while the Second Place winners show the wrong (July) category. And if you look at the archived winners/finalists via the "view all previous" links, it shows the original general categories. I'd like to encourage photo friends from other sites to join BP, but these anomalies do not give the impression of a reputable photo site.

Sad. It is the only word that keeps coming to mind. Sad.

Martha, I noticed what you did. They have some July categories listed instead of the June categories. It should be leading lines in the design category and it says S-Curves. I was confused before, now I am really confused!!

IF the sub-topics were announced automatically at roll-over (at the VERY latest); and IF the Finalists and Winners, both 1st and 2nd place, were labeled correctly; and IF the Finalists in each category included ONLY images that were appropriate to the month's sub-topic; this new approach might work. But since none of those "if's" is the case and it does not seem likely that they will all be corrected (we are starting the 5th month of this experiment and the problems persist), I must agree that the situation is both frustrating and confusing for old and new members alike.

I agree with everything that Nikki just said. Since I can't say it better, I'll just add - I think it's time to go back to the old way.

Check out the winners for the July contest...seems like somebody mixed up the categories? I see the ones for August mixed in with July...and lots of the winners have zero to do with what the category is called...was there a category for abandoned buildings in July also? I have been posting in that category all August...?

"Abandoned Buildings" was indeed the August sub-category, so you are fine, Jill. As others have mentioned, the 1st place winners categories are correctly labeled each month, but the 2nd place winners are NOT. If you look at the July winners, both 1st and 2nd place, you will see that in Man-Made (the category Jill specifically referenced), they all fit the July sub-category which was "Monuments and More at Night". Yes, the 2nd place July winners are labeled "Abandoned Buildings", but apparently the 2nd place winner labels will always be off a month (check back to the June winners where all the classic cars are labeled "Monuments and More at Night").

I was delighted to get an BP email this morning saying I'd won 2nd place for my fountain pen/postcard photograph... even though it was said to be in the Fruit (Still-Life/Flowers) category. Knew this was just a mix-up but I had a good laugh!
