Best resolution for photos for website

I am having trouble with images "stepping" on a diagonal. I am sizing them at 21 x 14" at 300 dpi, which is my standard print size. If I reduce the image size, they don't look as good (i.e. I loose color and depth). How to keep a good file and eliminate stepping?

Are you asking about the best image pixel size to upload here to display at BP?
If so, I recommend you take your final image edited (full size) version, then resize that down to 800 on the longest edge. (DPI is irrelevant at that point.) Then upload that resulting "small" file to your gallery.
I've not experienced any loss of color or depth or sharpness this way, for my BP uploads, and I get to control the image reduction process - if, when I resize to 800 in photoshop, I think it needs a slight nudge of sharpness, I can do that, before uploading...
If you upload a "big" file, BP will resize it to 800, and you have no control over their resizing process.
