Selling an image for a website Someone would like to use one of my images for their website. Can you tell me what I should be asking for in terms of money, size, rights. Also they want to alter it in photoshop which I'm not comfortable with! Would copyright protect me from any alterations to my photo?

You could ask them what they are going to do to it and then do the alteration yourself..I have several of mine on websites, but I didn't charge, just got credited for the use..I'm a sucker, I know. I have a bunch of CD covers too, but I just get copies of the CDs and get credited for the photo. I'm sure you will get a lot of much better options than this.. I'm just one of those people who doesn't care if I ever sell anything or not. It's just a hobby for me.

Thanks, Carolyn! THey are selling a product. They're selling a weight loss product! HUH???LOL!! They're asking for a particular flower photo.I'm not going to charge either since it happens to be an old photo that I no longer display. I don't think I want to be credited for it if they're making changes!

That's why I suggested that you do the changes if you approve of them at all. Then you would at least know they would be done Jessica style!

Hello Jessica, You can look at sites like Corbis and see what similar photos are selling for. They go by file size & usage rights to determine the prices. If they want to buy the image outright - like a major advertiser might want to use and will not want to see that image again anywhere except on their own billboards or magazine ads, you could get a lot of $$ for it. But you would also be selling it & giving up your rights to sell or use it again. Check it out, especially if you dont care for the image very much and dont mind parting with it. Good Luck, Carlton

I just went on Corbis and calculated a photo for use on a healthcare package for 5000 and med res (1/4 page) for a 2 year agreement and it came out to $1475.00 - and this is just for usage rights, if they wanted to buy it outright, it would nbe a lot more $$.

Alamy is another good place to check prices. Even if you don't want to charge those kinds of prices, don't give it away. I am constantly asked to use my photos on all sorts of websites, if I actually did give them away I would be flooded with requests. Your photo has value or they would not ask to use it - they are going to make money why shouldn't you? The only time I ever give away a photo is to a registered charity.
