Monitor calibration woes...

This could also probably go into the 'Problems with Images' section. But I digress. Here's the deal:

I've a 4-year old Dell 1704 FPT monitor. The colours have always been spot on, despite having never done a real calibration. Recently however, I'd been getting a number of 'your shots are generally underexposed' comments. So earlier today, I purchased, installed, and ran the Eye One LT calibration product. Prior to doing so, I noted the relevant specs. They were brightness: 75% (contrast is fixed... not user-adjustable); Red: 95; Green: 98; Blue: 100.

I then let the software do it's thing. I had to manually bring the monitor's R,G, and B settings to 50 each to make them fall within E1's 'centre of tolerance'. Aside from that, everything went smoothly.

I'm having a difficult time liking the results. The colours are all still intact. But the overall brightness is now way down. On the one hand, I now agree that yeah, my shots do appear to be genearlly underexposed. OTOH, numerous shots on this site (taken by others) that I'd always interpreted as 'morning shots' now appear to be 'late afternoon shots'...they look underexposed, too! This despite my monitor's brightness still showing itself at 100%! The only thing I can think of is that this has something to do with the RGB settings now being 50/50/50. But if I go back and reposition them to the prior settings, I might as well have left the Eye One on the store shelf, no?

Would appreciate any thoughts/comments.

Tnx!

Just a note to let any potential respondents know that while I do ultimately plan on revisiting this ASAP, I have in the meantime reinstated the 1704FPT profile as the default, reset the colour and brightness settings, and all is right in my world. Unfortunately, your collective worlds will once again be screwed up whilst any of you are viewing any of my recent shots.

I've a bit more (re)reading to do and a couple of new ideas to try, which I hope to do in the next week or so. That said, I'm still most interested in anyone's thoughts/comments.

Cheers
