Problems with camera settings

Why does my camera shoot black or dark images when I have it set on Tav or Tv on my Pentax K10? the fstop is set at 3.5 and shutter speed at 125 or 250 and I get black.

You should be getting a blinking shutter speed and aperture in the viewfinder as a warning of underexposure.

Even though Tv and TAv are autoexposure modes, they are much more limited in the range of possible exposures than P or Av modes. With the shutter speed fixed at 1/125 or 1/250 the camera simply cannot open the aperture wide enough in Tv, and cannot set the ISO high enough in TAv to give good exposure in dim light. In such conditions you must either set longer shutter speed, or put more light on your subject (eg. use flash).

Ok ,thanks Jon...then that makes me wonder why you would even want to use them at all?

I use Tv all the time to set the minimum shutter speed that I can hand hold with a particular lens. But you do have to be aware of the light and either increase the ISO setting or use a tripod with a slower shutter speed in dim light. If you use Av you still have to be aware of the light or the camera my select a very slow shutter speed to compensate and if you are not on a tripod you will end up with a perfectly exposed blurry photo. If you use M then you have to adjust both shutter and apeture :0)
