Pentax MX vs. Nikon FE 35mmSLR

I took some courses back in high school using a pentax mx and loved it! Lately I've been looking for a camera again, and I don't really know anything about shopping for a manual camera as it has been so long since I've even used one! While looking around, I found the mx again, but also found a number of others. I'm wondering if the Nikon FE35mmSLR compares at all to the mx? If not, do you have any suggestions on cameras with similar abilities but improved picture quality?

Thanks!!
From the noob!

Your improved picture quality will mainly depend on your improvement with using a camera, and good lenses.
There isn't a brand that a Nikon won't compare to. If you're finding more lenses available for one, get that.

Like Greg, I would opt for the Nikon. Pentax makes a good camera, but Nikon's durability is legendary.

If it's Nikon you want, consider the FM3A body, auto exposure if you need it, and a worthy successor to the legendary FM and FM2's. If you go digital later, the higher line Nikon digital SLR's can use manual focus Nikkor lenses. The Canons, however, film and digital, can also use Nikkor lenses with the proper adapter.

You can't go wrong with Pentax, either. Look for another MX, or even an LX, which might give you a brighter viewfinder. A big strength of Pentax digital SLR's is that you can use any Pentax lens, even the old screw-mounts (with an adapter), AND you get in-body image stabilization using ANY Pentax lens.
The Canon SLRs can use Pentax lenses, again with an adapter, the 5D giving you no crop factor to worry about.
