Photography Question

Enlargements

I have a 6mp Canon Powershot and I shoot on the highest resolution available. I am entering some photos into the local fair and they want 11 X 14's but AFTER I make any changes (ie: lighten, sharpen, tint etc.) my resolution cuts in half making it impossible to enlarge. The originals are 2.2MB and up but sometimes my finished product is in the 700KB range depending on how much cropping I do. All of my images are JPEG. Any ideas? Thanks for any advice you have to offer.

In general, the loss of data seems to suggest that, beyond cropping, you're saving in JPEG format. Wjen this is done, data is lost.

Once you download the camera to computer, open a file and immediately save it as a TIFF file. Do any editing on a duplicate of that original.

When I work in Photoshop I sometimes find that my file size increases, this because of the workings of some of the tools. So check you image size [Pixel Dimensions] as you edit.

A six MP file is more than sufficient to create 11X14s despite a lot of folks opinions. My Canon 30D [8.2 MP] gives me 3.5 MB JPEGS and 8.5 MB RAW files.

By the time I'm ready to print, I find I'm working with 20 MB 8X12s that can easily be printed as 13X19s using the print driver.

If you want to make larger files before you start editing, try using Image Size to increase the image dimensions. Make sure you check resampling, and use Bicubic Smoother option. Work in small increments - don't increase size by more than 5-10 percent in any single action.
