How to buy lens for a used 35mm camera

I just bought a 35mm Rebel XS SLR on eBay. It comes with a 75mm-300mm lens, but that is all. How does a person know what lens are compatible with this camera? And what guidelines should be considered in purchasing other lens?
Thank you for your help!

If you don't have an instruction manual, call Canon Service (they'll charge a nominal fee of $2-$7). Or find one on the web (http://photonotes.org/manuals/eos-rebel-s-ii/ is not specifically for the XS, but is close enough.

All EOS cameras can mount and use all of Canon's EF mount autofocus lenses. Earlier manual focus FL and FD mount lenses cannot be used (they won't fit), nor can the latest EF-S lenses that are made specifically for the Digital Rebel models and 20D/30D/40D (they won't fit either).

Among Sigma, Tamron, Tokina and other 3rd party lenses, they must be made for "Canon autofocus". Their latest lenses for digital cameras will mount, but project a smaller image that won't fully cover the 35mm film frame so should be avoided. The "digital only" lenses for these companies are designated DC (Sigma, DG are ok for film), Di II (Tamron, Di are ok for film), and DX for Tokina.
