Add color and filter out hazy looking uv rays.

Since digital the use of physical color filters is not neccessary anymore. They can be added afterwards in PP (in PS: 'image' –> 'adjustments' –> 'photo filter').

That's a rather complicated question since there are so many different types of filters. UV/Haze filters filter out excess UV light. They tend to filter excess blue light and provide a warmer image. They can also filter out excess Haze to make an image appear sharp. I use 2 types of colored filters. Warming filters filter out excess blue and provide warm tones to an image. I use Tiffen 81A and 81B filters for that. Cooling filters are just the opposite they make an image appear to be more blueish. I use a Tiffen 80A for that effect. It is true that a lot of these effects can be created in photoshop. I prefer to get it right in the image when I take the picture. That way there is less time involved with playing around with photoshop. Most of my adjustments in photoshop are minor exposure adjustments and sizing for different uses. Circular polarizers are one of the most useful filters that you can own. They can saturate colors, reduce glare from reflections, darken a blue sky or make stormy skies appear much more dramatic. I hope this helps to answer some of your questions.
