Photography Question

I Can't Afford One! Is There Any Hope?

I would love to take a BP course, but I simply cannot afford to. Is there a way to win one? A scholarship-type thing? Or maybe judges could award a free course to perhaps one finalist each contest?

It's only an idea. I just really wish I could take a course. I have heard such great things about them and seen the proof of how well people are doing after having only taken one or two.

Thanks,
~K

Katrina, you are right...they are extremely rewarding! I've only taken two. I picked up a camera at the same time I started my first class here...just six months ago. I've learned so much! Your suggestion of a finalist receiving a course is great! Maybe a lottery type of thing! The only thing I can say, save your money, the classes are worth every penny!

Well, you could wait for the scholarship program (if there was/is one). But while you're waiting, you can get some free, excellent lighting instruction at http://www.photoflex.com and their studio / portrait lighting workshops at http://www.photoflexlightingschool.com/
You don't need to be buying their equipment in order to take advantage of their lessons. And, if you look around the net, you'll find other excellent, free detailed, instructional photographic workshops as well.
Take it light.
Mark

  Hi Katrina,
Thanks for your interest in BetterPhoto's online courses! (And thanks, too, Margie and Mark, for your input.) A suggestion:

If you haven't already checked them out, BetterPhoto's 4-Week Short Courses. are shorter in length AND cost a lot less than the regular 8-week offerings. Plus, there are some excellent subjects that fit perfectly into a 4-week format. Each course involves lessons, assignments, lots of instructor-student interaction, useful tips and techniques, etc. And, as with our 8-week courses, they are fun, too! Here's the 4-Week lineup:

Thanks again, Katrina!

I had thought that a course at BP would be a great reward...Perhaps that was just wishful thinking! Though if they had one as a prize, someone who didn't need it would probably win... Those of us struggling for a win, who could use the help, couldn't win the prize in the first place... =(

Katrina, one other possible suggestion: many of the instructors here have published their own books on the topics covered in their courses. Of-course, the classes go into much greater depth and the feedback on assignments is extremely valuable; however, if you cannot afford to take the class at this time, you might check out the books at your local library. I have books by Bryan Peterson, Kerry Drager and Brenda Tharp and find them helpful.

Katrina I just bought the book

Shooting and selling your photo's by
Jim Zuckerman and it is wonderful.

Extremely well put together and very informative with some of the most beautiful images I have ever seen.

In fact it only took two day to get to me the fastest package I ever received.

If you can not afford the courses consider purchasing the books. They have a wonderful selection on Better Photo.

In time I am going to purchase two or three more of them.

Kerby

  You're welcome, Katrina!

Hi Irene and Kerby,
Thanks for your excellent suggestions! In fact, at the BetterPhoto bookstore right now, there's an excellent package "deal" on Jim Miotke's book and DVD ... and, as you point out, many other fine books are available too:

Katrina. May I suggest three very important books on photography. They were produced by Ansel Adams himself. They are entitled The Camera (covering body types and different formats, lenses and accessories), The Negative (about exposure, the Zone System (easy to understand) and developing your own film) and the Print (about attaining the ultimate rendition of your subject). Three very serious and eye opening books that should be part of any photogrpaher's library.
