How do I get action shots to come inside a gym?

I have a Cannon EOS Elan 7. I am having problems getting action shots at basketball games to come out clear and sharp without being blurred. I have tried different modes on my camera. I have been using 400 - 800 speed film. I also just bought a FTD 5500 electronic flash to use with my camera because I thought maybe lighting was the culprit. But I am also very inexperienced and I really would like some help with this problem. What am I doing wrong?

you'll have to use the flash and get down close to the court. There isn't enough light in a gym to shoot without using one.

Brenda, I have an Elan 7e that I used to shoot high school sports this year, and you can do several things. First, use a monopod, that will help eliminate camera shake and some blurriness, and the RS-60E3 remote cable release also helps, too. What type of lens are you using to take the photos? Anything with an aperture of 5.6 or less, you should use at least 800 speed film and your flash (you can try 1600 but it might be grainy). Set the camera to the AI servo mode, and use manual settings of 5.6 aperture and 1/250 or 1/350 shutter speed. Gregory is right about getting as close as you can, try standing behind one end of the court at about a 45-50 degree angle to the basket to catch the action. Good luck!
