What are these spots?

I've gone back and looked at the original image - there are some spots on the petals, but they look like legitimate spots - and not missing pixels. So I'm thinking this happened when I sharpened the image. Any info on how this happens, and what to do to avoid it, would be appreciated.

Do you have other photos that the spots show up in? Possible dust on your image sensor? Or simply Jpeg artifacts?

Dead pixels usually are white or a bright color. That could be dust on the sensor, although it's not shaped like it. And it could be small dirt or spots on the flower that you didn't notice at first. Clean the sensor, clean the flower. Otherwise, use the clone tool to remove them.

Pat, you are seeing what was there--spots on the petals. when you enlarge to the poing that individual pixels can be seen, a black spot will produce at least one black pixel. I like taking close up (macro) floral shots and , if I am not careful to thotroughly examine the flower, I get home and see the spots. Easy to repair with the healing brush. The best advice, and I try to do this at all times, is to "interview" lots of blossoms to find the pristine stand-out. I recently went to a large public garden and was dissapointed that all the roses, though still in bloom, had passed their peak and none were fine enough to photograph. John

Yeah, look for a good flower that says "poing"

Thanks for the responses. The problems was my choice of flowers - I've just never noticed the pixels like that before. They were pretty obvious even at a lower magnification. I'll watch for the "poing" next time. :)

I suggest you take two rolls of film and call me in the morning.

And what? Use the film to clean the petals?
