Delayed Flash with D100

I have a brand new D100. When using flash, the flash goes off after a tiny delay after the exposure. The delay is long enough to cause subjects tochange positions or close eyes. I have the setting on the ring that one pushed the button to move, on the "stacked paper" icon. I don't know what else could be wrong. Can someone plese help? Sharon

There are 2 flashes with the D100. There is a low power preflash that the camera uses to set the flash exposure before the shutter opens, then the main flash when the shutter is open. Your subjects are reacting to the preflash, thinking the picture has already been taken. You need to tell them not to move until the second-bright flash, or use a non-dedicated non-TTL speedlight.

The D100 (and other digital SLRs) use the preflash to measure exposure with the matrix meter. It is not possible to meter "off the film" TTL when the shutter is open because digital sensors do not reflect well/uniformly the way film does.

Thanks you so muc, Jon. I thought that might be it. So how do you turn it off? I am an animal photographer and it messes with the eyes? Sharon

A non dedicated, non TTL speedlight? Can you give me a few suggestions? I have several flashes, but am not sure which might work.

Something along the lines of the Vivitar 283 or 285HV, Metz 45 CL-1, or similar from Sunpak, Quantum Instruments, Acheiver, etc. The flash exposure is "automatic" in that the speedlight has a built-in exposure meter to control output, but the user must set the lens aperture and shutter speed manually.
