Up until the introduction of the D40 series, all of Nikon's autofocus SLR cameras (film and digital) have the autofocus drive motor in the camera body rather than in the lens. Nikon has introduced some lenses with motor built into the lens that work with (most) of their autofocus SLRs. These are designated as AF-I (Internal motor) and AF-S (Silent Wave motor). The Silent Wave models are near silent and faster focusing than those using the camera's AF drive.

The D40 digital SLR does not have its own autofocus drive motor, so it cannot autofocus with lenses that don't have built-in AF motors. It will autofocus only with AF-I and AF-S lenses, and with Sigma HSM lenses. Other Nikon AF lenses can be mounted and used with full autoexposure function, but they require manual focusing.

"Meandering menu sequences" is a subjective evaluation. The author thinks that some functions that should be readily accessible take too many steps through the camera's menu screens.

"Limited AF system." In addition to being limited to AF-I/AF-S/HSM lenses, The D40 cameras have just 3 AF sensors where the competition has 7 or more. To the extent that many beginners (and experienced users) are confused by the use of multiple sensors and often select just the center sensor, It is not necessarily a bad thing for the D40 to have just 3.
