Focusing my Nikon N80

I recently bought a Nikon N80. I'm new at photography, and don't know much about this camera. I've read the manual, but can't seem to figure out why my camera won't focus. It won't focus while set on (A)Automatic focus or (M)manual focus. Please help! Thanks!

What lens (brand, model, identifying marks...) are you using? Is there any attempt at autofocus (lens changes focus but doesn't lock on a subject) or is there no action at all in the lens? Does the camera's autofocus motor run?

You mention "(A) Automatic focus or (M) Manual focus," but the autofocus selector switch on the camera front near the lens mount is marked (S) Single Servo AF, (C) Continuous Servo AF, and (M) Manual focus. The camera will only attempt autofocus with the switch set to S or C.

It's a Nikon 28-80 lens. It attempts to autofocus, but doesn't lock on the subject. It's set on "S" on the front near the lens. and "A" on the dial to the left. Is there anything else I could let you know that may help solve my problem? Thanks!

Is there a filter on the lens? If indoors a circular polarizer my be cutting too much light for the AF to work. A linear polarizer is not compatible with the AF system and may cause it to hunt focus.

Is there sufficient light? Are you
aiming at a contrasty subject or a blank wall? Is the AF-assist light working?
