EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens compatible with Canon

I am interested in buying a more professional lens to take portrait/weddings/kids/sports photos. Is the Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L USM Lens compatible with Canon Eos Rebel G & do you think this would be a good lens for these types of photos-if not do you have any suggestions

All Canon EF lenses can be used on all Canon EOS cameras (35mm and APS), without exception. There is an EF-S lens that is compatible only with the Digital Rebel/300D.

The 70-200 f/4L is a terrific lens that is good for the all-around use you have planned, especially portrait/kids/sports. A wide-angle zoom such as the EF 24-70 f/2.8L USM or EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM might be more useful for wedding group shots and candids. For portraits you might want larger aperture (f/2 or f/2.8) for even less DoF (eg. EF 85 f/1.8 USM, EF 100 f/2 USM, EF 135 f/2.8 Soft Focus USM), though using the 70-200 at ~100mm and f/4 should give very good results.
