Use flash with a Rolleiflex

I have been given a Rolleiflex MX-EVS camera. I would like to ask if anyone can advise me on using flash with this camera. I have a Vivitar 2000 flash connected by sync cord. It has Manual and Automatic settings. I know I will need to use the X contact on the Rolleiflex. What I would like to know is what aperture and shutter settings I should use to take indoor portraits with this set up? Do I set the light value as it is (it then reads for something like F5.6 at 1/15) or do I set it for a value that gives me a shutter speed of 1/60 or 1/125. I would like to have shallow depth of field. I am new to this type of camera, usually shoot Nikon autofocus where I shoot on aperture priority and it picks the exposure for me. Thank you for any help. Hope Shores

You can use the Vivitar 2000 set on Automatic. Set the aperture for that specified on the flash that corresponds to the camera to subject distance range and film ISO you'll be using (or chose the film speed based on the aperture you want to use - slower films for wider aperture and shallower DoF).

The in-lens leaf shutter of the Rolleiflex will sync with electronic flash at all shutter speeds. Choose a high speed like 1/125 if you want the flash to provide main light (dark background). Chose a slower speed to give more exposure to the background/ambient light.

Oops, D'oh, Sorry! You mentioned connecting the flash to the camera with a sync cord. If the flash is mounted off-camera, then the aperture setting for use with the flash should be based on the subject to FLASH distance, not subject to camera.
