Portraits in front of fireplace

I was asked to take some portraits at a party that my friend is hosting. She would like the portraits to be in front of a fireplace. I was wondering what would be the best way to set this up. I thought about having them sitting down facing at an angle. Also, I just have a shoe mount flash, no other lighting equipment. Thanks.

  Here's what I would do...

Have them sit or stand as you suggest. Then, meter the fire, then stop the flash down one stop from what the meter says for fill-in. This should turn out a nice picture.

I'm not positive on this, as I've never shot fire, but you may want to use tungsten film for this. Just a suggestion, but someone else may be able to comment about that.

As a safety net, I would bracket to make sure you get the exposure right.

Jerry
