  Edward

There are many places to get a website. One for example is:

www.mrsite.com

Yep, there are lots and lots of web site hosts out there. Question is, how many of them will give you the exposure, so-to-speak, that you need to sell your work and / or services??

Assuming that's what your goal is Ed, then that's one of the distinct advantages to BP. Unless you have a reputation wherein people are seeking your work through one search engine or another, if you're marketing, I think you to be in with a kind of nest of photographers to get your work considered.

Someone the other day mentioned to me that a lot of art directors and creative agency types troll around here looking for stock images hoping to take advantage of some newbie with a lowball price for usage rights or an outright buyout. I thought that was an interesting comment and it's probably true for some here who don't know any better or don't want to ask about it.

Any way, my point is that you should probably stay with the flock unless you're just looking for a place to display work and not actively market it. Whaddya think?

Take it light.
Mark

Interesting perspective Mark and I agree with you assuming that the other person's comment is true. Also, I like the ease of use of the BP website.

What prompted my question is that they deleted the e-mail alias I was using (actually they deleted all e-mail aliases except for "firstname@website.com) and they never announced it except for posting a message on the website update page. I didn't know about it for some time and subsequently found out that I missed many e-mails. That just really got me angry. I've had issues with the BP administrators before. Yesterday sent them a 2nd request asking them to add the alias I use and asked them to e-mail me when they did that. I haven't received a response from them yet and they haven't added the alias.

So I'm looking for other options. I may stay here or I may leave.

Thanks again for your insights.

Ed

What does "nice answer miss arnold" mean?

Anyway.

One thing I don't like about BP websites is that although they have different styles - they are all still the same, and soooo boring. I don't find them creative at all. I have found Mr Website great, and lots of options and each website can be customised to what you want. I know you can do that here as well, but the "skeleton" is still boring, and there isn't much difference between the choices.

to me it doesn't seem right to use this website, which apparently some don't feel is up to par or inadequate,to recommend or proliferate another website which some consider better.
as far as recommending additional websites and links to further education,in depth explanation or just an fyi, indeed.
oh,the miss arnold thing.benedict arnold was a traitor in early american history, and please take that with a chuckle as it was intended.

  Sam:
Nothing traitorist going on here. We're just helping each other out. And if the folks at BP are smart enough to listen to our gripes, maybe they'll improve the websites.

And thanks for explaining the "arnold" thing. Next time address her as "Mrs. Benedict Arnold" and maybe we'll get the joke .

Natalie, I think Sam is implying that Ed is some sort of traitor like Benedict Arnold for wanting to jump ship. Personally, I see Ed more as a Ben Franklin / Alex Hamilton type of of patriot taking on the crown.

But you know, I think he's got a very legitimate gripe. He signed up for one service and midstream, they changed it and gave him something else he didn't want or need to his own detriment. Where I went to school, we called that breach of contract.

So, first, Ed's not complaining per se about the BP website. Second, he's got a very legitimate complaint and concern. Third, if he can get it resolved, and I'd be willing to support him in doing that, it's to everyone's benefit who is paying additional for BP site hosting and fourth and not least, if everyone who had a beef kept their mouth shut, unlike some people around here, then NOTHING would get improved, fixed, repaired, amended, and contracts like these would go unfulfilled.
That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.

My only regret is that I have but one life to give to my website (ROFLMAO)

They finally fixed my email alias problem but still, when I signed up we had unlimited email aliases allowed. Now I'm not sure.

Hey everyone, I am a newer member to the BP site. I also am a member at a site called www.thefineartoriginals.com. They do not let you create your own website but they do host your work on an online portfolio. The look is very clean and professional and I think it is another place to show off your work and get additional exposure. They have a free package where you can display two pieces, as well as other higher level packages.

It seems like they have mostly painters on the site but I have been seeing more and more photographers join up. Anyway just thought I would mention it so you all could check it out if you get a chance.

I was using photosite. They were inexpensive and all I needed. Now they are shutting down so I too am in search of a new website. I need the absolute best price, and for me it doesnt have to be elaborite and I dont even care if my name pops up on a search engine. Anyone know of any other sites similar to photosite, or any websites fairly inexpensive?

  Bobbi,

That is to bad about photosite. I had mentioned this last year in a previous post but thefineartoriginals.com is a great site. I have been very happy with them, as it has been over a year since I have been a member. Anyway just thought I would drop a line and let you know you should check it out if you get a chance.

Hi Craig - thanks for posting about Smugmug.com. I have also been looking for another web host - although I do like my BP site I would also like to have a different type site. Smugmug looks like a real possibility. However, when I started trying to navigate through the site it seemed awfully slow. I do have high speed Internet that usually delivers fast connection even to graphic intensive sites, but today that site was almost painfully slow. Is this the norm or the exception? Thanks

Irene

Thanks and I think I found smugmug most interesting. For $150 a year you get everything under the sun but they also have good packages at just $40 a year. Dont have an extra $150 laying around at the moment but I will probaby go that way.
