How to shoot in a dim ballroom

Recently, I was asked to take photos of an event held in a hotel ballroom. The ballroom was not very bright. The problem I faced was, when I used flash, the photos don't looks natural with harsh light. If shoot without flash, the speed was too slow and photo was not sharp. I would like to know what kind of setting is the best for this situation.

If your shooting digital, you want to use a high ISO setting such as 1600. For film you need the highest speed film you can find. There is no substitue for fast glass. You may need a f1.8 or faster lens.
