Lens for portrait

I am having a difficult time to buy a lens for portrait. I have 3 Nikons, FM2, N90S and D70. I was planning to buy Nikon 85mm 1.8D but in some reviews it says it is too sharp for portraits.
Any advices?
Thanks a lot
Marta Azevedo

Never heard of anybody complaining about a lens being too sharp. They must of taken a picture of somebody who wasn't happy with how their skin was instead of the lens.
I'd get it, but there's always the regular type zooms like a 70-300mm 4.5/5.6. Zooms usually aren't as sharp by nature as straight telephotos.
And the mid aperture types usually don't have the highest quality glass, although still can be good.
