I've heard that the problems were with vista. So much that it's considered a complete flop and people went back to the previous windows.

It's AWFUL!!! I also have PS 7 and Vista. Lots of troubles although they are minor for the most part. I hear it's mostly 7 that has the problems, not the later versions, if that helps.

I do not yet have Vista, and don't expect to soon. Keep in mind PS7 was built (released 2002!) long before Vista, and while Vista and Microsoft claim long-term backward compatability, eventually progress (however you measure that) has to get in the way and older programs won't be as efficient and may even fail. Adobe engineers tune the product to a particular operating system, and while the Mac may be even more finicky with version preferences (where an OS matches better to a specific version or two of Photoshop), even Adobe's best efforts cannot forsee what a new operating system will bring and how it will affect performance. They don't issue bug fixes for that, they issue new versions of the program (about every 18 months or so). CS3 was supposedly optimized or enhanced for Vista.

Some interesting additions for Photoshop since PS7...HDR, better Camera Raw integration, better layer management (ability to select multiple layers; smart objects). Though there is more these are potentially every-day things. CS4 has some interesting changes, such as a dedicated adjustment palette that changes the way you use adjustment layers (no more clicking to open/close the dialogs). If you are on 7 it may be time to consider an upgrade, for OS compatibility if nothing else. But I must say, I still use PS7 depending on where I am and even Elements and don't miss the new features too much ;-)

You get realistic pricing on Amazon:

Photoshop CS4 Windows/Vista
Photoshop CS4 Windows/Vista Upgrade
Photoshop CS4 Mac/Apple
Photoshop CS4 Mac/Apple Upgrade

Why don't I list Extended? Many people are buying Extended mistakenly. Extended has some specialty tools for 3D design, medical imaging, and a few other things people working with photographic 2D images will likely never need. Save yourself the $300!!

Can you upgrade from 7 to CS4? I was under the impression you had to have CS something or other in order to upgrade.

  Carolyn,
I don't know if you can. I suspect you will not be able to go from 7 to CS4 (Adobe's way of trying to keep you buying ;-). However, I hear of people picking up copies of a CS version on ebay on the cheap and then using that to upgrade. IF YOU DO THAT, be sure to get an UNREGISTERED copy of the program, as you may not be able to upgrade otherwise.

I would call Adobe's customer service to find out exactly what you need to upgrade.

I put those links in for others who might be reading this thread. Sorry if that was confusing.

Mine did that for a while after I got Vista. Just restart and it should be ok for a while longer. Mine has quit shutting down, but it does lag a lot on some functions..you have to wait til it catches up.

  Carolyn,
Do you mean that you totally pull PS7 off the computer and reload to get it to work again?
So far Mine seems not to open at all.
any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Debby

No, all I had to do was restart the computer..Have you downloaded that Vista thing from Microsoft? I had a little less trouble after that, but I can't remember the name of it..some kind of a performance pack they called it, I think. If I were you I'd do just what you said, though..Make sure you're up to date with all their corrections stuff and then uninstall and reinstall it. Might work.

I'm debating weather to purchase a new computer (Dell) with Windows Vista AND Windows XP installed! Don't know if it would make a difference?? Does anyone have both installed, and if so, does that help with photoshop issues associated with Vista? I looked at Adobe and they say that PS 6 is compatible with both. I would have PS 6 installed also.

I am running PS 7 and Vista. Cnet has a download of the old NikonView. Install it then find the NEF plugin in its directory and put it in the plugins file format folder. Easy fix works fine for me. If you want more details on it let me know.

Those of us with plugins have a problem with changing to a Mac..either we have to buy them all again, or do without. Neither is a good option. I wish I'd known when I first bought a computer.

As far as filters and plug ins I keep an older PC as my second computer running XP pro. My Mac comes 1st always. My noise Ninja software installed on both systems with no problems. Stand alone version. If I need a plug in filter not on the Mac I use my jump drive to transfer the shot to the PC apply the filter and put it back on the jump drive and back on the Mac. About to purchase Photomatix I hope I can put it on the PC and the Mac as well. Installation is easier on the Mac. Surfing the web is safer much safer on the mac. System maint. is much less time consuming on the Mac. For $99 a year one to one training courses are available for all apple software even Pro Apps. Changing over is so simple why wait? Just keep the PC on the side.
