WHAT CAMERA? Which camera would you consider better for the first time SLR buyer the Nikon N55 w/ AF28-80 lens or the Cannon Rebel GII w/ 35-80 lens?

Flip a coin. Both are good choices for beginner and there isn't enough difference between them to worry about it. In either case you're better off buying a better lens separately instead of the kit offering. Assuming that's the Nikon 28-80 f/3.3-5.6G, it's "not bad" for a kit zoom. The Canon EF 35-80 f/4-5.6 III on the other hand is "not good."

Jon: Yeah, kit lenses in general are not wonderful. Perhaps Kelley can buy the Rebel camera with the Canon 28-105mm f/4-5.6 USM EF zoom instead. Not spectacular, but better than the 35-80mm zoom. Cheers! Peter Burian

Kelley, Peter's right the Canon 35-80 kit lense isn't great but I'd suggest getting the Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM lense rather than the f/4-5.6 its a little more versitile and not that much more money. Just my 2 cents
