Photography Question

Which Vivitar flash is better?

Currently I own a Canon Speedlite flash, which I use with my Canon EOS 3. I am unhappy with the quality of the flash- it is too automatic for my taste and tends to override my individual preferences. I have been reccomended to buy either a Vivitar 285 or a Vivitar 283, and was wondering which was a better deal?

They are both within my price range, and I am an intermediate photography student hoping to pursue more photography in the future. Any advice would be great!

Don't buy either. They're not intended for auto-everything cameras, that is, these models aren't "dedicated." I have a Vivitar 285 [bought it more than 25 years ago for my Minolta SRT 201 semi-automatic camera (no auto-focus).] I'm not sure whether Vivitar now makes "dedicated" units with these model numbers.

You didn't say which Canon Speedlight you have. But, remember, if it's a reasonably good unit, it should be able to be operated in a full manual mode. With my EOS 3, I use the Canon 420 EZ. It's about 15 years old and I bought it with my Canon EOS 620 in 1989. I always shoot flash in the Program Mode, can't be bothered with the adjustments. When I shoot those kinds of pictures [like, for example, portraits] I use photofloods. It's not the Canon 550 EX, but it's all one needs.

Check out models by Sunpack and do buy a dedicated version, if you're going to change.

The 420ex is not a decent flash, you can't manually control the zoom and just overall the lack of manual controls is a nuisance....The sunpak 555 w/ dedicated module is a nice....and a 150 g.n. is powerful too.
