studio lighting

Hi, I am new to studio lighting and am looking for a beginner's set like seen in Freestyle mag. What is the difference between stobe and monolights? I am looking to just do informal portrait or still lifes.......which should I get mono or strobe? I see a kit in Freestyle with 2 JTL monolights (J-110M)AND ONE KIT ON EBAY 2 STROBES bRITEK AS-90 45WS....BOTH FOR AROUND 300 DOLLARS...MY BIRTHDAY IS COMING UP AND I NEED TO PREPARE A WISH LIST FOR MY HUSBAND.....ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED,,,AS I AM A NEWBIE BUT love PHOTOGRAPHY!!!!!!!

A monolight is a strobe but a strobe is not necessarily a monolight.....hmmm sounds like my geometry class from high school. There are actually a couple kinds of strobes. There are monolights and pack & head systems. Monolights are self contained units. Pack and heads consist of a power pack that can control a number of flash heads.

The advantage of pack & heads is that the heads are lighter than monolights and the individual heads are cheaper than monolights. The advantage of monolights is you don't have all these cords running from the pack to the heads. It's all contained in the monolight. Also, monolights are usually more controllable in terms of light output. Pack & heads generally don't offer as much control. Monolights are cheaper to start out with but pack and heads can be cheaper in the long run since new strobe heads are cheaper than buying a complete monolight. I prefer monolights because of the simplicity and control over the output.

I strongly suggest you check out Alien Bee monolights. They are very inexpensive but are very good quality lights. And they are very lightweight. You can probably pick up brand new Alien Bees for what you would pay for a used set of lights on Ebay. Check them out @ www.alienbees.com .
