28-105 lens Please explain the different types of lens. The camera I just purchased has a 28-80lens. Someone suggested I also get a 28-105lens. What are the differences? I am a mom and want to take close up pixs from far away and also close up of faces and other detailed things.

If you already have a 28-80 it would seem a bit silly to get a 28-105 too. If you are looking for a longer lens then the best choice would be to look for someting like a 70-200 or a 75-300.

Hi, Dani. I think Jeff is right about the 70-300. This zoom is probably the most reasonably priced, as well. You didn't mention what brand/type of camera you use, but all the big brands have a 70-300 or 75-300 zoom. You should also look at the third-party brands like Tamron and Sigma. They will be less expensive--sometimes they are half the price of the name-brand or dedicated lens. If you want to take close ups, you should try to get a macro option on your new lens. Sigma makes a 70-300 f/4-5.6 with macro. The macro option will let you focus closer to your subject. The Sigma lens above has macro at 200-300mm for the Pentax and macro at 300mm for Nikon. Not sure about Minolta or Canon, but I'm sure they are comparable. Also, I agree with Jeff about the 28-105. You don't need it if you already have a 28-80. The person who told you this was probably referring to the differences in lens quality. Hope this helps. Good luck with your shooting.
