Remembering Boston

Remembering Boston

----
On Sunday, over 40,000 runners competed in Philadelphia's Annual "Broad Street Run" for charity.
----
This was the first wave of runners, just beyond the starting gate. As he does every year, the Mayor, Michael Nutter, started every race with his "blast" can of air (a story there), and "high-fived" the runners who passed close enough to touch his hand. Some got hugs from him.
----
What was different this year was the tribute to Boston. "Sweet Caroline" blared from the loud speakers until all had left the starting line, and Mayor Nutter DANCED in the street for the entire 2-hr starting period.
----
Oh...the air can story: For a while I was standing on the stage beside the Mayor. The can was located near my foot. YES, I knocked the can off the stage and someone had to crawl beneath the draped platform to retrieve it!

The view from the Starting Gate as the first group of runners makes its way down Broad Street. A commuter train can be seen on the Overpass. The race finished 10 miles away at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.

In the moments leading up to the start of the race, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey poses for me with Officer Anthony, one of the scores of officers who patrolled the race on bicycles.

Holding his Blast Can (which started every wave of runners) Mayor Nutter, in black-and-white training suit, stands before the crowd of runners waiting to begin their race.
---
The red-haired man in sun glasses to the left is, as you might guess, the Mayor's Body Guard (or one of them).
---
He had his eye on me a LOT (or so it appeared) as I was at my boldest, getting up close and personal for much of the two hours of the race's start.

A wonderful capture of the event, Michelle! I'll bet you were embarrassed when you "kicked the can".

How lucky for you to see such an experience. Sad that it happened in the first place but amazing how many people care.
