My observation is that if you want others to look at your photos you must first observe those of others, To get payback.

But I think Better Photo is also a factor. I have noticed that on the first page I get when I open BP that the photos of the same people are always displayed

For that BP page, I am thinking you don't mean the home page but rather the main gallery that opens when you visit. This is customizable but I'm thinking yours is set to a gallery with the "sort by" set to "most loved". In

My Profile > Notifications, Subscriptions, and Preferences
you can change that to a page like the Recent Contest Entries. Or something else.
