No Jeff, this was shot against the light. The lines were added using the find edges filter and blended using the multiply blend to give the petals definition. #8240190

Dale, beautiful photo. I love the white background. I see the lines Jeff mentioned too. I'd try and remove them if you can. The are distracting. :)

Also, personally I wouldn't mind seeing a little more pop in color. But that's probably just a personal preference.

Ok, going against the grain - I totally love the first one without the stroke. I know this rose (we had one until last winter when an ice storm killed it) and the color of the first one is almost dead-on.
I don't like the rose buds missing out of the back. It actually looks like somethings missing to me. Not even sure that it would need the blur that Tony suggested, though it would be interesting to see.

I'm going to go with Teresa and Tony on this one, Dale. It is a beautiful image as is, but the "star" of the shot is the full blown rose and she needs the spotlight all to herself! I don't like it nearly as much with the stroke. I'd leave it off. Very striking! #8241620

Sorry Dale, the "find edges" results is not working for me. I'm not sure what it is, it just doesn't feel right.

As for the other changes, I like the tighter crop with the buds removed and my vote is for no stroke on this one. #8241635

You're right Rita, when will I ever learn? Thanks guys, for the honest assessment. It's too late to change my choice but next month I'll re-enter this version and see what happens.

Let me explain my reasons for selecting the first version over the last. I think it was Peter that told me, in effect, it's what's in the photographer's head that makes the shot what it is.

When I took this shot, it appealed to me because this particular bloom was just about on it's way out while in the midst of a new generation. The trick is to confer that thought to the viewer and in this case it didn't work.

Your preferred version still maintains that dual generation type image but I am biased by my previous thoughts. Does any of this make sense? #8241835

Yes Dale it makes sense. I too find it hard to remove myself from my pictures when I'm evaluating them.

However I think (now that I've thought about it) that I like the orginal post best. I don't think it needs the stroke and it seems to be missing something without the buds behind the rose. However I do like it with the color a bit more intense. :) #8242038

Dale - for me, the title conveys exactly what you were after. The Betty Boop rose is unique and mimics our life by seemingly having a bloom fade away while at the same time, a new one is born. Having grown this rose and witnessed it's growing pattern, I think your 1st version conveys the "life" of this rose. The 1 without the buds is just another rose image - albeit a very lovely one - with none of the charm and story (or character) that is so very prevalent with this particular rose. But then, I'm a goof when it comes to roses! :) #8242160

For no particular reason... this is one of the very few shots of yours, that I am just not feeling Dale. Can't quite define why, however I will try. Your shots are rarely "still"... they are full of people, places, and interest. This is one of MY shots.... stagnant, and not of any interest. No offense taken Joan. My interest in this rose is because my wife (who's nickname is Booper) collected Betty Boop material long before it became fashionable.

Also I like it because it has beautiful colors and is very soft and not tightly wound like most roses. Also it is very difficult to get a flower image that is not "still". LOL But many are sooooo pretty. :o) #8243247

I like this. I like the first ones composition with the buds, I like the stroke because the bottom has an angle where the leaves are, and I like the the color and lesser find edges on the second.

I like going back after I have made my own assessment to hear the "wrap-up". I think that is why I like the first shot, too, Dale. It is not just another pretty rose but it "tells a story" and has a theme about the stages of life that affect us all. I think that there can be a story in most images we create and showing a bit of that story adds even more life to that image.

And of course it has a bit of Christmas to it. There is an old song that is sung at Christmas called, "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming?" I am currently listening to Charlotte Church's version of that song. Merry Christmas to each and every one of you. I look forward to 2010 with my Phellos! #8244151
