Reminiscence

Once Upon a Time in the Kitchen...
No microwave, no convection oven, no warming drawers; no instant mashed potatoes, no vegetables in steaming bags, no Lean Cuisine. Yet from such kitchens in the 40's and the 50's came the most delicious food!
I took this in a store but it reminds me kitchens from my childhood, my aunt Lottie's in particular... she made the best perogi's this side of Heaven and her Sicilian spaghetti sauce (although she was Polish) was the best this side of Italy, I'm sure. All that from scratch with no fancy gadgetry. That was Creative Cooking Power! (And contrary to what people think about that period of time, she did have a job outside the home - as did my mom and all the other women in my family).

I get to be first on this wonderful capture and even better story? Yeah me. AWESOME NADYA. Love, love, love it! And don't tell Don about your Aunt's perogi's or he'll be sitting at her front door. LOL This is one of the best MT entries I've seen yet. Outstanding my dear. #1165211Tarun Bose August 07, 2009

Thanks, Ann! I don't even know how you found this photo; I did get it on the site but not into my gallery and not into the contest until just now (1:30 pm). Heavy rain today, so the internet is going in and out like a candle in the wind. I doubt if I will get to comment very much, but I will try when I can! Thanks again. I did remove a lot of price tags from this shot and I see now where I missed one. Well, I guess it stays! lol #7827035

Thanks everybody, for your wonderful comments! I too had that Betty Crocker cookbook, although I lost it somewhere in the course of all my moves. One of my favorites though, is a cookbook from 1910! Believe it or not, that sort of thing comes in VERY handy if you're short of ingredients. Although I don't do it every single day, I do like to cook from scratch. Saves money - tastes better - and you know what you're getting! #7828009Phillip R. Connolly August 07, 2009
There is no doubt about it, you ladies are wonderful...what would we do without you??? A great find, Nadya!! My mind goes back to those wonderful days (or were they really?) when I see this kitchen!! It seems that flavour and nutrition has given way to convenience now, huh??Phil #7828050

Oh, Nadya. Thanks for sharing this wonderful, nostagic image. It reminds me so much of our kitchen growing up in the 40's and 50's. All they need here is a "Hoosier" cabinet.Erin Appelbaum August 08, 2009
