The Awakening

Description

aperture f6.3, shutter 1.6 sec., ISO 400; The Awakening is a scupture along the Potomac in DC. My original image had a helicopter that appeared to fly into the hand, but I took a plane from another image and "flew" it into the picture instead.

Welcome back Vicki!!!
Well, I must be in a way different mood than everyone else as I've taken a more serious view of your image. My first impulse was " a powerful and dramatic shot"..still is. It's a super shot, but it instills, for me, a sense of loss of power in that the hand appears ominous. An emotional shot for me. Well done by you! #1317939

Jason Gehrman May 04, 2005

Creative shot. I am interested to see the original shot instead of a photoshoped one. But great idea none the less. Have to agree with comment above. This shot is just on that cusp of about to be released chaos. The threat of doom. Creative thinking. Good luck with the competition. #1317972

Cindy, thank you for saying this...As I worked on this, I could not help but think of Americas loss on 9-11...I started to title this "Beware", but decided to use the name of the sculpture because I think this could say a million words for all of us to "Be Awake!"...We lost a friend in one of those planes that day as so many others did! I was hesitant to enter the image, since it can provoke emotion...but decided to go ahead....My other shot with the helicopter is on film...I will try to figure out soon how to add it on to this discussion... Helicopters fly back and forth constantly over the sculpture and look like they are flying into and out of the hand...Please feel free to make any comments you would like to....and thanks to you all who have posted! #1318140

Kevin Burns May 04, 2005

Perfect timing!!! Well done.
Sadly I thought of Sep.11th. #1318144

Brinn MacDougall May 04, 2005

I think photography should provoke different emotions..my first thought was 911 and it upset me. Then, the other side is the skill of presenting an image with emotion, which, is very well done!
design today.. #1319217

Marsha S. Smith May 04, 2005

Wonderfully done, but just a little scary! #1319319

Goshka G. May 04, 2005

My first thought was - what impeccable timing, before reading what you wrote, Vicki! Now I'm thinking - what impeccable PS manipulation!! Whatever the feeling the image invokes, it remains an impeccably composed shot, Vicki! Slightly ominous, true, but I didn't really think of Sept 11 (I was actually in NYC when it did happen, so maybe I'm just trying to block it out). #1319570

Patty Razonable May 04, 2005

Along with all the comments above, this image is very well done with the effects that generates the memories not forgotten......impressive!!! #1319992

DiAnna F. Paulk May 04, 2005

Wow, Vicki! Way to generate a discussion! You go, girl! :) It is a wonderful image. I can't tell that it was manipulated at all!

Only 7 more teaching days and I'm hitting the road! We'll have to get together again. #1320044

First of all I want to say I love this shot...
Everytime I see a shot of a jet, I can't help but think of 9/11 and if it weren't for 9/11 I wouldn't have this aweful gut feeling for shots of jets. It's just a split second of remembering those planes hitting the towers...but it goes away quickly and I am back to present time and can appreciate the humor you have conveyed.
I am sorry for your loss of a friend on that jet but am glad you can still present a photo like this after the loss, showing that we can move on and we won't let terrorist stop us from being our creative selves.
Congrats on being a finalist!
