Actually salt crystals. This sunset was photographed in Badwater, Death Valley - CA at 228 feet below sea level. It was 91 degrees at 7:00 pm (16-35mmL @ 22mm, ISO 100, f/ 20, 6.0 sec., ND Grad 3 stop hard)

Exif: F Number: 20, Exposure Bias Value: 0.67, ExposureTime: 6/1 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 100, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 22.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 5D Mark II
