WOW now I am hungry! You gonna make enough for everyone Joan or is it to me first come first served?

Nice still life!

Yum-meee! That knife gives me the impression that the bread is fresh baked. I like the subtle "Home Sweet Home" written on the clay jar. I want to open it to see what's in there!!! :)

Lovely still Joan! -Laura #7194325

Thank you Sherrybear... hope you had a nice breakfast! So nice to see you again!

And Laura.... Fresh Baked by..... BREADMASTERS's here in the lovely Rio Grande Valley!! LOL. Actually we brought 20 lbs of Canadian flour, with the intention of baking our own bread (bread is different here than what we are used too).... however, you know how that went... Not a single loaf baked in this house! and in the jar is a CANDLE ROFL!!

This and another which I will post later were inspired by Art Smith's new cookbook "Back to the table" which has bunches of fuzzy warm wonderful photo's of food, table, friends and family. Thought I would practice LOL!! #7194820

Thanks Marisol, Debbra and Jodi! I sometimes think I enjoy still life photography the most.... lots more time to set things up and you have more control! Mind you, I can still mess it up LOL!!! #7214450

Lovely tones on this one too! I think I like this one just a tad more than the other. Keep sharing!! - Esther #7215085

Do you supply photos for cookbooks? If not you should. This picture even makes me want to cook. Great shot. #7215163

Joan, I'm real impressed with what you are doing with still life. I like the objects in this image. However, while I understand the reason for the knife, in this image it's placement distracts from the composition.

Cannot say how it could be placed though. My first thought was to have the bread overlap the other way and lay the knife at a diagonal with the handle in the lower right corner and the blade disappearing behind the egg bowl. Must bow to your still life skills, 'cause I'm not good at it.

Exposure wise, I feel the same issue that was with the first still life, still effects this one. It's very mono-tonalistic and the texture, especially on the eggs, is distracting.

May I suggest applying a major noise reduction to everything in the image except the bread, the knife, and the cutting board. Then flatten the image and apply a multiply blend at about 30% opacity and add a high pass filter to everything that did not get noise reduced. #7215253

Cool still life shot! Makes me wish it were morning.....now I'm thinking eggs for breakfast instead of cereal! I would like to see this in a warmer tone and while some like the grainy look to it...I'm wishing it were softer! :~) #7215959

Ooo and while you're at it, vignette would look pretty here too! Just my little two cents but I really like it either way. VERY COOL STILL LIFE JOAN! -Laura :) #7217651

Debbie E. Payne February 26, 2009

Joan - It doesn't matter if you made the bread or not. I still want to come to your house for breakfast!! I like still life work, too, but don't really have that much of it. Yours is so nostalgic and "homey". If I were to do still life of food, I would be reduced to working in front of an audience at various restaurants around town. #7217678

Dale Hardin February 26, 2009

LOL Debbie, you found out about my wife's favorite thing to make didn't you? Reservations. No kitchen still life shots in my household either. (but mostly because of my ineptness in doing them) #7217769

Debbie E. Payne February 26, 2009

Dale, actually I am quite lucky. Martin does a lot of the cooking and I'm there to clean up his mess. So he probably wouldn't appreciate me running around during his cooking arranging things "artfully" in his space while I wrestled with a tripod. He'd probably spill wine on my camera because it is almost an essential ingredient in his cooking. #7217891

ROFL @ Debbie and Dale!! I like to cook, when I am in the mood, however, that isn't as often as Randy would like. I have a saying... the one that's hungry is the one that cooks!! LOL.

Dale, thanks for your observations. The "texture" on the eggs is "sweat"... it was about 90F and Randy insisted on putting the eggs back in the fridge between shots, so .....

On the other points, they knife doesn't disturb me, other than I wish there was more of it... and its a bit grainy through choice actually. And... I like the monotone, but will do some more work on varying the tonality. My issue is the crop actually, for me it isn't really working but can't find a better one!! #7218062

Christie R. Bielss February 26, 2009

Wow Joan! This looks so yummy! I do like the grain in this - adds a very interesting quality to the photo. I also think the monotone is perfect for this type of photo, but you need to add some depth to the color to get those darker/richer tones. I like the crop. Only thing that I see is the knife block in the back and the little logo that's on it - find it distracting. It could just be me and how the Henckels "man" drives me nuts on my own knife block though! LOL! I love still lifes - and this is a really good one. #7218544
