Description

Sunset at South Tufa State Park on Mono Lake in California. These exotic limestone formations are formed when calcium-laden water from springs interacts with the alkaline salt water of the lake, forming limestone formations similar to the stalagtites and stalagmites found in caves.

They form underwater over hundreds of thousands of years, and they're only exposed due to overuse of the inlet creeks by the City of Los Angeles. This may be your best opportunity to see these rare formations before they're submerged once again.

I'll be leading field workshops in the Eastern Sierra in June and October this year, as well as to other amazing landscapes throughout the American West. Contact me for details or to g
