Dreaming of Mono Lake

Sunset at South Tufa State Park on Mono Lake in California. These exotic limestone formations are formed when calcium-laden water from springs interacts with the alkaline salt water of the lake, forming limestone formations similar to the stalagtites and stalagmites found in caves.
This is one of the best sites in the world to see these rare formations. They form underwater over hundreds of thousands of years, and they're only exposed due to overuse of the inlet creeks by the City of Los Angeles. Since the lower water levels threatened the nesting sites of 90% of California's gulls as well as many other bird species, a court has ordered that Mono Lake's water level be raised. This may be your best opportunity to see these rare formations before they're submerged once again.
