More History On The Old Baracks Note Storm Damage
Uploaded: October 21, 2008
The Ordnance depot soon grew to be the largest in the South. It served as a main supply depot during the Mexican War in 1847. In January 1861, the barracks were captured by state militia forces under Louisiana Gov. Thomas Overton Moore. The Confederate Army soon took over. Many Louisiana volunteer units in the Civil War were supplied with ordnance left at the fort. The fort was recaptured by Union forces in August of 1862 and held for the balance of the war. It remained an Ordnance depot until control was formally transferred from the Ordnance Department to the Quartermaster Department in 1869. The post was deactivated on June 6, 1879 and U.S. troops moved out, leaving a single Ordnance sergeant as caretaker.
Louisiana State University site
In 1884, the buildings and grounds were transferred to the Department of the Interior. Louisiana State University leased the land and buildings from the federal government beginning in 1886 and in 1902 was given to LSU.

Hey Bill! I've enjoyed viewing the Louisiana images. Great history lesson, too. I've shot images of the Old State Capitol but never the new one. I'll have to put this on my agenda for the next time I get over to Baton Rouge. I'm heading through your territory tomorrow on my way to SE Arkansas to visit family. I'm not likely going to have any time to stop and photograph unless there is that one can't pass up opportunity! :) #6646881Bill Knaps October 23, 2008

My American history is growing!!Bill Knaps October 25, 2008
Thank you Ellen and Gail for your nice comments. I apprecaite you very much. Since I was a young boy I visited our Capitol and the thrill is still in me when I visit there. It is such a beautiful place, both the building, grounds and what is on the grounds. There is a Bell similar to the Liberty Bell close to the old Fort. I don't remember the history behind it, but my next trip I will get some shots of it and the history of it. Bill #6657688Sandy Powers October 25, 2008
