Louisiana State Capitol Building Steps
Uploaded: October 09, 2008
A tourist reads the names and years each state was admitted into the Union. On the initial approach to the capitol, one cannot help but notice the grandiose set of stairs which lead to the main entrance. The 49 steps leading to the first floor bear the names of the fifty states in order of admission to the Union. The last step lists both Alaska and Hawaii. Because construction was completed before the two states were admitted, only one step was left, so both names were engraved on the 49th step alongside the state motto and “E Pluribus Unum”. The front steps symbolize the interdependence of the fifty states and welcome visitors from Louisiana, other states and the world. Maybe you can read Arizona 1912 on the 48th step. Bill

I'm glad you included people in this image, Bill. Without people to read the words, they are just that, words. Nice one! #6575507Bill Knaps October 09, 2008
Thank you Bonnie. You know normally I don't want people in my photos, but time I did to show that the tourist read each step on their way to the top. Makes for a less boring flight of stairs. Bill #6575516Marsha S. Smith October 09, 2008
