Description

Shot with a 4X5 camera and a soft focus lens that I assembled. I had the mask on a piece of Plexiglass so I could light it from below.

What a great idea with Halloween coming up! #1012106

Hi Sharon,
Here’s a couple of Halloween tips!
Tip 1, When working with strobe in a variety of holiday situations you may want to work with a long exposure. While this won’t change the light from the strobe it will allow the existing light room light, candles and so on to also become part of the light in the shot. Some cameras have a long exposure mode with strobes; this is a good time to use it. Also you might want to move the camera during a long exposure at Halloween, this will give interesting trails. Good at Halloween, not much good any time else.

Tip 2, You can take great pictures of masks Halloween and otherwise. One thing I like to do is put tracing paper behind the eyes, either right behind or a little further back. Then I use a small strobe or other light to make the eyes light up. If you balance the light to what you have on the front of the mask you can get some great effects.

Thanks, John Siskin

Hi Lonnie,
Thanks, I’m glad you like the shot. I shot this with a liver lighting class I used to teach. I sometimes miss having live students, but the opportunities for interaction here at BetterPhoto are fantastic. On line teaching give you time to really consider the student’s work. Thanks, John
